Orange Peel on Decals

I understand that the slick surface of my decals maybe repelling the finish causing an orange peel effect and that applying cp to the decal will help. Besides using a brush and being careful to not get any outside of the decal (black finish on the rod) are there any other tips.

I put the CP all around the rod's circumference. You'll likely have trouble keeping it just on the decal.

Another thing you can use that works as well, if not better, is a coat of Krylon Clear Acrylic Spray over the decal.

Jimi, I may give you a call in a few. These are Bill-Mar decals. What I did was wrap an area with black thread and apply a thin coat of One Coat finish (High Build Two part finish). When the finish was cured, applied the decal/sticker and coated with another coat of One Coat finish. The finish pulled almost completely off the decal. Took three coats to fill that hole in and resulted in a thick wrap that I'm going to tear off and re-do. I have a rod to finish up today and I really don't want to mess it up.

The problem I had with getting any CP on anything other than the decal is the CP makes it a little cloudy over the gloss black and know body wants a cloud next to an iridescent red head mermaid

The clear acrylic spray won't cause any cloudiness.

I have been wanting to use that clear UV acrylic spray as a color preserver. If what your saying is true it would work well or would it do the same as finish.

The CP will be clear after finish is applied if you let it dry long enough. Try it on a piece of scrap.

The clear acrylic spray isn't suitable as a color preserver.

Ted, just for your info... Orange peel is an effect caused in painting by putting the paint on too dry. I think you're speaking of fish eye with regards to the finish repelling away on your decal.

It sounds like you spray the decal after it is applied to the rod? I spray the decal with the Krylon before applying it to the blank with excellent results. It only takes about 10 minutes to dry.

Jimi, thanks for the nice chat about decals - I took your suggestion to clean the area with alcohol, apply the decal, wipe the decal with alcohol and apply the finish. I do have to admit I was to cautious to try it on this rod I've been working on so now my test wrap stick has a pretty lady fish on it. Looks like that took care of all the issues - thanks again for taking the time to call.

Putter - you are right my error - see ya this weekend at Woodland - can't wait to get some pointers on the Tiger wraps.

TEd you have to be careful with alcohol sometimes the brand will have a fragrance or something in it that can cause problems. But glad this worked for you. Just be careful if you run into something in the future and causes problems it could be the alcohol. Learned this from Ralph.

The original article on the Tiger wraps was in the back issue of Rodmakers magazine last year. This would be where Putter learned it as most of us did. Good tips in there on colors!!

That can happen, fortunately in this case it did not. Keep using the same brand of alcohol and all should be well.
