Flex Coat and The Man

Just got back to building after the High Point Show and would like to give a report on a new product. While we were setting up our booth of Friday afternoon a gentleman walked over and handed me a package of new products and casually remarked "Some companies have people who do read the internet boards and listen to the people who ask for new things". He smiled and walked off and went back to setting up his booth.

About an hour ago I need to install four tip tops and remembered the package. I searched my shop and found the package of new Flexcoat Products. Inside this small package of products was the darndest thing I have ever seen. A piece of the Flexcoat Tip Top high temperature adhesive about 5 inches long with a small small diameter on one end of 3/64" to a large diameter on the big end of approximately 6/64" fell out on my work table. I immediately recognized just how much time this gizmo would save me in building rods. This one little piece can be used for several rods. No more messing with a glue gun, cut fingers trying to shave pieces from a stick and no more burning fingers trying to get some down in a tip top tube. Just stick it in and whack it off with a razor blade - done deal!

Folks plain and simple Roger Seider is a genius and one whale of a nice guy. His understanding of the trials and tribulations of a rodbuilder and access to people who know how to get things done in a simple manner is a real value to all who build rods. There is no way that he can get rich on this simple little thing but I for one want to thank him for all he does and will do for us in the future.

Ask your vendor to get you some of these things and you too will feel the same way when you cut your work time by a huge percentage.

John I know Roger will never ever see this unless you print it out and hand him a copy! Tell him all I really want to know is WHAT IS NEXT?

I have some insight on just what is next from Flex Coat and it's going to make major waves in the rod building community. I hope it comes to fruition and very soon.

Major waves and flex coat.Bet they won't be using that to pimp their new product.I picked up this tip somewhere.Heat up your glue stick.Touch the end of it to some wax paper, pull up and it make a nice thin long string, touch the wax paper again.Re-heat ect ect.....

I would suggest not using wax warp as the wax could contaminate and cause future problems. I use a piece of glass (actually old picture frame with glass in it safer), and leave glue stuck to it and use razor blade knife to cut off what I need when I need.

I also use the high temp heat sticks because of the summer heat we get down here in the south

Roger Seiders is one real nice guy. Although I have not met him in person I have spoken to him on the phone and emailed him a number of times. His interview in the Rod Maker mag about how Flex Coat came about is a great article. He is a real pioneer in the rod building industry.

I first saw the trick with a glue gun and thin strips on a piece of foil in the Fkex Coat video! So easy, it's scary! This sounds even better

The only problem with preheating and making insertion pieces manually is that the adhesive is designed for maximum strength with only one heat up. The product information sheets will tell you that it should be heated only one time for maximum strength. The second time it has lower bonding strength. The glue gun works but it is labor intensive and does not produce a consistant cylinder of adhesive. Steve get a few ot the sticks I am referring to and you will be amazed at the how easy they are to use. With the tube filled with a cylinder is heated it is immediately placed on blank and when it cools you have only heated the product one time giving you maximum bonding strength. A hand crank ice cream freezer will work fine but and electric one sure is easy on the arm.
