I'm building a 7' heavy power with fast action rod with a penn 930 casting reel for pier fishing for flounder and reds. The question that I have is I want to do a spiral wrap, can I use the fuji new concept layout, and then turn my guides like they need to be, or is there a nother way to do this? Any help would be great, Thanks alot.

Just set it up like you would a conventional rod, flip all but the guide closest to the reel to the bottom of the blank and add an appropriate bumper guide between the top guide and the first guide on the bottom. It does not matter you are using the new concept layout.

I have been playing with the "simple spiral" also and have found no reason to use more than 3 sizes of guide. The stripper at say 16, a bumper guide as close to the blank as possible, and then running guides all the way up. The thinking is, once you cross the centerline of the blank, why move it any further away on the other side than you have to?

To echo what Bill just said I was playing with the various spiral wrap concepts the other night for a bottom rod I'm building. I originally was planning a revolver type rod with the butt guide at 0 degrees and transitions at 60 and 120 because IMO it is the best looking of the spirals. After a few hours of looking at how the guides were loading I went with the simple spiral. The spiral concept relies on guide leverage to balance the rod and the quicker you get the line to the bottom of the rod the more this effect becomes apparent, plus it saved me from using an extra guide. I only needed a size 20 for the butt guide and the rest 10's but went with 3 sizes (20, 12, 10) for aesthetics only to keep the typical progressive sizing of guides.
