butwrap unravled

A butt wrap I still had taped to the blank had some Sulky Holoshimmer and Guderod HT Metallic gold in it.
I did the tie down wrap with Ht Metallic gold. While removing the tape, the Holoshimmer started getting loose, them the Metallic gold started coming loose. After trying to salvage it for about 20 minutes, I finally ripped the whole wrap off.

On the next attempt, should I? 1, tie down with regular thread,2 apply cp before removing the tape, 3 appoxy the wrap before removing the tape.

The Holoshimmer and Met gold must be slick enough to allow loosening, especially when wrapped over
each other. Any suggestions before I start again? It was a pretty detailed wrap too. uuggg

I wrap my tie-offs "tight".....and with at least 20 to 30 wraps before I trim anything. It sounds like your tension was just too lose.

I agree with Bruce, but another trick we've used is to put a very light coat of CP in the pattern before we do the cap wraps.

I would think the metallic tie down thread was the concern. If it was a closed wrap that is a lot of thread to tie down and needs a lot of tension that just cannot be accomplished with a metallic thread. I would CP first then tie down with nylon thread (NCP or Regular) .If the nylon is packed well you then can wrap the metallic over it to get the look you want (after a coat of cp). I`ve cut off plenty of wraps that took a long time to do, not fun at the time but the replacement wrap was always better!!!

That happened to me once. I now always CP the wrap and partially tie off as well before removing any tape or tapering the threads.
