I ran into a problem with color preserver. when I applied it to my guides it immediatley loosend up the threads and dried sort of blotchy and the threads became a bit transparent and dull in spots. My thread was a nylon rod winding thread. I have no idea if it was NCP, and I don`t know how to tell the difference. It was applied while turning on the rod dryer and the air temp was about 65 degrees. Is some one able to tell what could be the problem?

That sounds a bit odd, but I wonder about your thread tension when that sort of thing happens. What type color preserver did you use and did you thin it?

NCP thread will be marked on the spool as being so, it's an opaque thread that looks a bit like paint. Regular nylon rod winding thread has more "sparkle" than the NCP variety.

Bill....Long ago I put some c.p. on some n.c.p. thread and more than likely it was a heavy coat, the thread got all puffy like and the thread over lapped itself....That was the last time I ever did that, I made sure it was a light coat from then on out and if I needed more c.p. I second or third coated and never had the problem again. Note: I try my best to not use c.p. on n.c.p at all times.

I would have to agree with Tom and think maybe your thread tension was not enough for your guides. I have seen this on others rods before when they had the tension set too light. After being re-wrapped with a higher tension and packing the thread properly the problem went away.

Fred does bring up a good point - NCP will tend to swell terribly if heavily wetted with CP.

I spent several hours doing a weave using rayon thread that I bought at a sewing shop. There were some colors that I wanted to use an were not available in Gudebrod. That is before I started using Madeira. After applying CP to the weave pattern, all of the threads began to sag. I had to cut the weave and start over using Gudebrod regular thread.

Thanks for your reply. I used Flex Coat and I did put it on a little thick, so that is probably what caused the thread to stretch, What about the dullness and almost being transparent in spots? I hate to have this happen again.

Don't know about the dullness but being transparent in spots could mean that you didn't pack the threads tight enough. Are you using light thread over a dark rod blank ?

Yes, I used bright yellow nylon thread on a brown rod. My concern with the loose threads is, I read if they are wrapped too tight it makes it difficult to tweak the guides. It sounds like I need to go lighter on the preserver and tighter on the wraps. Thank-you for your input.

ditto here! found madeira thread locally and used it to weave a texas flag. the weave turned out flawless and I was very pleased, till I hit it with cp and evrything puffed up, sagged, bent, etc. and ruined my weave. Thats when i too found out that rayon thread is definatly not the thread to use.
