I'm about to do my first decal application. I have Micro Sol & Micro Set. I'm putting this silver decal on a dark green rod. I'm not putting this on top of thread just a bare surface.I have done some reading on applying the decal. My question is, do I have to put down some epoxy finish before I apply the decal? How do you guys do it?
Thanks, Terry Re: Decal application

Is this green surface a glossy finished surface? If so, it can be put right on top of that. If it's not glossy and smooth, then I'd put a coat of finish or PG down first. Putter Williston, ND Re: Decal application

I have always put down at least one coat of epoxy underneath my decals. It might not be needed, but it's just preference. Since the blank is already painted, it really doesn't require it. If the blank was bare graphite I would definately suggest a coat of epoxy to seal the blank and keep bubbles from coming out underneath the decal. I have stopped using Sol & Set both. It was causing my decal to slide all over the blank and I now I just use straight distilled water to soak the decal, then a have a second bowl of distilled water with one drop of dish soap that I use to wet the blank prior to installation. That allows me just enough slide but not too much. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys. The rod has a glossy green finish to it. It's not a matte finish. Re: Decal application

Terry,
To many times in the past have decals had the cloudy finish even on a high gloss blank. There are still many imperfections on a glossy bank that can cause minute air bubbles under the decal that causes the cloudiness. It is safer to apply one coat first. Jim,
Thanks. but the decal is already in place. It came out clear so all I have to do is put the finish on tomorrow. The next rod that I do I will have to put some finish down before the decal because it has a matte finish. Terry Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
