i have been using minwax tung oil on my cork grips. i like the look it seems to darken them up a little. many people seem to be using tru oil which i guess is a gun stock finish. my question is are these basically the same or should i get out on the town and find some tru oil. i know the easy answer is to get some tru oil and try it but i'm trying to save myself some time if they are pretty much the same. thank you Re: tru oil/tung oil?

You may want to check out U-40 cork seal too. I messed with the oil for a bit, but have just settled on cork seal. It does darken the cork, and makes burl look really nice, and it's really quick and easy to use.

Cody,
Two completely different things. Tru Oil is a 'finish', it dries hard and dries hard quickly. It was designed for gunstocks, i.e; it was meant to be 'handled', meant to be used in the outdoors-water isn't a problem for it. I like how it darkens and protects the cork. I use a mix of burl and plain cork on my grips, and this stuff makes the burl look sharp, evens out the color contrast between the two nicely, and keeps the cork looking good and easy to clean. I don't overdo it, one or maybe two coats put on with a soft cloth. It still 'feels' like cork and isn't slick. I've used Tung Oil on wood projects before...not something I'd put on a fishing rod but that's up to you. Buddy Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
