Maybe this chuck will work, seems reasonably priced. Anyone have any experience with Craftsman?

When I looked at the specifications it wasn't clear to me how it would attach to the lathe. Then I looked at the product description and saw MT2. This isn't evident from the picture. It is likely that you won't be able to pass your mandrel through the MT. You could check with Sears though.

If you're wanting to keep your cost below $100, take a look at the chuck used by Mike Barkley. He uses it successfully for the applications you describe. It's a Penn State Industries chuck and it's priced ~$85.

Go to Amazon and do a search on Lathe Chuck. I didn't see Mike's chuck, but there are others. Check the Penn State Industries website also.

This is the one [www.pennstateind.com] There are a lot of builders, myself included, that are very satisfied with it Not saying that it's the best out there, but it is MORE than adequate and may be the best bargain out there!

One more suggestion. I would strongly suggest getting the extension bed, it will make your life a LOT easier. If you want to bore out a 10" piece of stock, you are talking about 10" for the stock and 12" for the drill bit and a few inches for the chucks

If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!!

That one would be good. It's almost the same as the Nova MIDI, and you don't have to buy the jaws seperately.
