Can 5 min epoxy be thinned

I've poured my foam cores and have finished sanded to sizie. Now its time to cover with carbon fiber. My concern is that 5 min epoxy (FC) is a little on the thick side. I'll be coating a 13" grip. Anybody ever thin 5 min epoxy to make it more brushable? I've practiced on an 8" cork grip and after placing the sleeve over the grip the epoxy set so fast that my alignment was noticably off. Any suggestions? BTW I can get my shop cooking hot so all my finishes can flow easier. Re: Can 5 min epoxy be thinned

I would think using an epoxy with a longer curing time would be better, but I have yet to dive into the foam core handles. Re: Can 5 min epoxy be thinned

I agree with Mike. I remember the article in the magazine stating to use boatbuilding type epoxy, which will wet out the grip much better. 5 Min Epoxy isn't going to work very well and would probably yellow pretty badly over time. Re: Can 5 min epoxy be thinned

Don't remember seeing the article telling you to use 5 minute type but it did say "quick set" if I remember right. I don't think you'll have enough time with the 5 minute variety to get things to work out. Better get something with a little more working time or your core and carbon might be headed for the trash. I'm using the 5 min epoxy to glue the carbon fiber to the foam handle. I think that the regular rod builders epoxy (1Hr set) will stay wet to long and wick its way to the ends of the carbon fiber making it difficult to form them around the ends of the handle later. I thought about thinning the 5 min epoxy to help make it faster (brushing time) when applying it to the foam grip. Re: Can 5 min epoxy be thinned

Menards -- (home building supply center in the midwest) -- carries tubs of 30 minute as well as 1 hour epoxy that work very well for all of your rod building needs. For these large tubs, each part a and part b is in an 8 oz tub. The price for this total weight of 16 ozs is under $10.
The epoxy that has a set time of 30 minutes has a nice working time of about 7 minutes (i.e,. it stays nice and thin. If you were to spread it out - to keep it cool, it would have an even longer working time. I would think that this 30 minute epoxy would be about the perfect choice for your needs.
