I've got all my underwraps done (A Thread BLACK)for a saltwater build. A few questions:
Do I apply a coat of highbuild FC or FC Lite on the underwraps. (only kind i've got) And if and when I do do this: Do I need to scuff the underwrap epoxy when applying guide wraps? and if so with what? How long is too long to wait between underwrap coat and guide wrap coat? thanks Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/10/2008 09:12PM by Jesster Brindisi. Re: Underwrap Coats

Really the only thing I do on all my saltwater rods with an underwrap is put CP on the underwrap. That way I can put the guide wrap on with no problems. Scott Re: Underwrap Coats

I dont even bother with a coat on my underwraps. I do under in A, over in D (C for stand up tuna rod), double over in D if a tuna rod) The first coat I apply so the finish only just soaks into the wraps. Lite or high build does not matter. Re: Underwrap Coats

CP on the underwrap. CP on the top wrap. Clear finish overall, as normal.

Hi Jesster,
I put a coat of epoxy finish on the underwraps for the following reasons - 1. I use very little CP 2. I want to be sure that the underwrap has finish to the blank. I feel that by only putting finish on the overwrap you may get voids and bubbles in the underwrap. I maybe wrong about this but that's the way I feel about it. 3. By putting a good coat of finish on the underwraps you have a nice smooth finish for the overwraps. There is no time limit on how long you can go between coats of finish. If you wait more than 36 hrs then you need to scuff the finish on the underwraps. I would use FC high build so you get good coverage on the underwrap. As noted above there is several different ways of doing what you want to do. Hank On The Rocks Fishing Wells, ME. Re: Underwrap Coats

I agree with everything Milton says. It makes your overwrap much easier and you are ensured that there is no gaps in the guide wrap. I also feel an epoxy to epoxy bond is as strong as you can get. I usually wait between 24 and 48 hours to do my overwrap, and I'm now using TM Lite exclusively.

Thanks for all the info. I think I'm leaning towards an underwrap coat on this build. Re: Underwrap Coats

Good informat ion and every one has his own method.
I use neither cp nor clear coat on the underwrap. I simply do the underwrap, then tie on the guides. I put on two coats of finish at that time. In particular, when putting on the first coat, I use a heat gun to insure that every single bubble is gone, that the finish is as thin as alchol so that it fully penetrates all the threads, and has excellent adhesion to the blanks. Never have had any problems. Take care Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
