Blank Strength Question

If you have two rod blanks that are same length, same weight, but one is built with a larger dia. and thinner wall, It will be stiffer.

My question is, would it be over-all weaker as the larger dia./thinner wall is easier to collapse, than a smaller dia./thicker wall blank?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Marc

Don't know about collapsing, but I bet it woouldn't take the day to day hits as well as the thicker walled blank.

The larger diameter plays the greater role in getting more stiffness. And yes, even for the same amount of material, but one blank larger diameter and one smaller, the larger diameter will be stiffer even though it has thinner walls.

As far as "weakness" goes, you have to define what you mean by that term. In terms of simply sustaining a heavier load, no, it's not weaker. In terms of being able to withstand certain other types of forces, yes it is weaker. You certainly couldn't beat and bang it around as much and expect it to withstand such a thing as well as any blank made from the same material with heavier walls.
