I am wondering with todays thread and finish if a double wrap of heavy thread is necessary for 100-130 lb class saltwater rods.

I have read several articles which detail the fact that with proper guide foot prep - i.e. no burrs, and the use of A sized thread to give the maximum number of thread wraps over the guide feet, that no underwrap is necessary.

Any personal rod builds using this technique?
Any thoughts on the use of single or multiple wraps as well as the use of A or D sized thread for either the under or over wrap if used?

You are gonna get 20 different thoughts on this debate as it has gone on for years. The whole "more threads per inch vs. fewer thicker threads". Yes for a 100 - 130 class rod, you need to beef it up a bit. The higher class rods tend to take more abuse and anything you can do to make it survive longer will help in its success.

The double wrap aids in protection when the wrap is dragged along the gunnel while trying to keep a fish from going under the boat when close.Kind of like two pair of gloves.The thread strength is not the issue.The guide will most likely fail first and pull out from under threads.

Roger; On a rod like that I use a triple wrap. "A" on the blank, with all the trim bands and inlays in it, then a coat of finish (I use Permaglos) then "C" over the guide feet, another coat of finish and either "D" or "C" over that. I assume that you are using roller guides. As Fred says, the rods are subject to some extreme abuse depending on how you fish it.

The responses all make sense. Especially the comments about the need to protect the guides as opposed to the need for t ying them on the rod.
Also, appreciate the comments on the finish technique.
