NGC Choker Guide Size
Posted by: Bert Nagy (---.atl.fdn.com)

I am building a spinning rod using a 7' Shikari blank for drop shot.

I am using the method decribed in the Rodmaker article on NGC guide placement. I have also searched the forum, and read the article in the library.

One thing is not clear to me is the size of the choker guide. The library article says to use the lowest and smallest (ring?) guide. The Rodmaker article does not say anything about the size, other than to put the edge of the choker guide on the plane from the center of the reel spool.

I am planning on using Fuji Alconite BLAG7 as running guides. Should the choker guide be a BLAG 7 or a higher guide such as a BYAG 7?

RIght now I have this rod set up with 8 guides

BYAG 25 - 22" from the reel center
BYAG 16
BYAG 12
BYAG 8
4 each BLAG 7's as running guides

Does this seem right?

Regards
Bert Nagy

The choker guide and running guides must be the same size and height.

Put the choker guide at a distance that is equal to 27 times the diameter of the reel spool, per the article.

I think that I would try 27, 10 and BLAG 7's the rest of the way. IMO, the various size offer no advantage. It's just my opinion but I try to get by with only 3 guide sizes

That is way too many sizes on a 7 foot rod. It might work, but you can get by with fewer sizes and perhaps shave a little weight off the rod.

I just did 2 recently

BYAG 25
BYAG 16
BYAG 8
BLAG 6 x 5

The other one

YSG 25
YSG 16
YSG 8
LSG 3.5 x 5 plus another LSG 3.5 for the tip

They both work great, you should use the smallest guides that you can, and get down to them as quickly as possible.

Bert,
The size of your chocker guide depends upon the size line you are going to use.
