Extending a rod

Here's the deal, a friend of mine has 2 rogue rods that he would like to have extended. Both rods are conventional boat rods that he uses for bottom fishing, blackfish (tautog, for you New Englanders), sea bass, cod and fluke. When he holds his rod, under his arm, he has his reel slightly forward and this causes very little of the rod to be actually under his arm. So he would like to extend the rods 6"-8".
I just re-read Issue 6-3 and was wondering if this would be a candidate for an inner sleeve connection. I have some thick walled fiberglass scraps and I believe some OLD solid boat rods that can be cut into scraps. Any thoughts???? Thanks Tony Re: Extending a rod

Hard to say without looking at the rods. The oversleeve is the superior method from a structural standpoint but depending on the rod and the use intended you can sometimes get by with a simple insert.
What is the total length of the rods at the present point in time? ............... Re: Extending a rod

Definantly inner sleeve. I'd cut the current rod directly behind the reel seat and inner sleeve it under the reel seat. Mount a new rear grip on your fiberglass scrap so the TOP of the grip reaches meets the point on the scrap rod where its OD matches the existing rod's ID and leave about 4" of the scrap blank above the grip. A little scotch brite pad to the inside of the existing rod and outside of the scrap, rod bond and then plug it. You don't have to strip the rod this way. I had a friend break a rod below the reel seat and I did thios and he hasn't had a problem since then (about a year and a half). Re: Extending a rod

The rod doesn't see much flex in this area, just under sleeve it and be done with it. I forgot to mention that the rod I did like this was a grouper rod, sounds similar to the same type of rod you are doing Re: Extending a rod

My initial thought was to remove the butt cap, add the 6-8" sleeve, using an inner sleeve, and install additional cork rings to match up to the existing cork rings and install a new butt cap.

I agree with Scott. If you can get your extension under the reel seat, by all means go ahead.
I have done this extension a number of times on factory built rods and so far , have never had one fail. Paul I fish therefore I am. www.hookeduprods.com Re: Extending a rod

You are going to have to ream the rings out past the OD of the blank to get them to fit over the butt of the rod. It won't be a good fit and won't match up well with the existing rings. It would look better to install a whole new rear grip plus would reinforce the rod at the reel seat. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
