Got a customer who wants a stand-up 30-50 class trolling rod that's 5 and a half feet long. Even the short Unibutts are 17 inches long-I can't make the math work. Any suggestions are welcome. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/05/2007 10:37PM by David Spence. Re: Trolling rod question

Don't use a uni-butt. Build it straight-thru on the blank. You will want to most likely employ a slick or tough butt to facilitate getting the rod out of the rod holder when a fish hits.
Uni-butts are great but unless he needs to break the rod down there is little reason to use one. And, at just 5-1/2 feet in length, most such stand-up rods are already short enough to easily transport. Occasionally folks will use uni-butts so that they can remove the butt with reel attached and lock that portion up. Talk to your customer. If he doesn't need this aspect of the butt and can carry and transport a 5-1/2 foot rod, I'd skip using a uni-butt. ................. Re: Trolling rod question

Tom-Thanks-I assume the blank goes all the way through the Tuff Butt therefore not adding additional length to a 5'6" blank-is that correct? Re: Trolling rod question

Get the Rod MAker on building stand-ups, it opened my eyes on these rods. Re: Trolling rod question

David, If he wants a uni-butt you just trim the blank (off the butt end) to get the 5 and a half foot length. If you use a slick butt or tuff butt you install the blank thru the handle to get the 5 and a half foot length. Re: Trolling rod question

Right, the tuff butt simply goes over the blank just as if you were installing EVA or hypalon there. The blank extends tip to butt.

This is a good set up I have used with roller tip and stripper with Black and blue Zirconium Guides. Rollers are not really a must on the 30-50 though.

Barry is correct, if he insists on a unibutt we do offer 43" blanks designed to be put in a Unibutt. Chase Foster American Tackle www.americantackle.us Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
