Go to the hardware store and buy a can of Minwax Stain preferably Clear. Throw the stain away or smear it all over that old piece of furnature - clean the can out three or four times with clean mineral spirits wiping it clean each time - wipe up around the upper inner can lip to insure all the stain is out of the can. Let it dry for a day in the sun. Rig it up with a screw and go for it

Put two of the four ounce bottles in and you will have enough for a lot of rods.

Look in your paint stache and you will probably find a can of stain you already have. This is a small expense and beats the devil of waiting for a can to be sent.

Buy a small Testors paint and take the metal cap off the testors and put it on the 4oz permagloss. The plastic cap on the permagloss is the problem, once it's replaced you can use nearly all 4oz before you have any trouble/special treatment with thickening or hardning.

Marty I know exactly what you are talking about.
Here is what I did. I bought a little can of wood putty and took the wood putty out and threw it away. The wood putty is a lot easier to clean out . And the can is not painted on the inside.

What about a can of Minwax polyurethane? I think I actually have an old one in a clear satin finish, I think.

These guys used to have them. They also used to have glass bottles, and metal caps that hold up better than the plastic caps that come on the PG bottles.

Marty & all,

I've purchased these "empty" cans at Lowes or HD, forgot which! It was 7 years ago and not sure if they still carry, but they had plenty in all the sizes from one pint to one gallon. Exactly what you see in the above sks link.

I know not everyone has one, but I use my Food Saver and vacuum seal bottle after every use. Have not had any PermaGloss go bad since.
