Just for kicks I lined up a few of my rods this evening. Guess what? The spirals aren't the only rods with non loading guides!! Just about ALL my conventional casting rods have guides that aren't loaded until you go to a point where you have a pretty good bend in the rod. This is supposed to be bad? They've been working hard ad catching fish for a long time now. I'm not going to strip them down and rewrap them unless somebody can give me a really good reason why a guide that is non loaded for the first few inches is anything to worry about. If something bad was going to happen to these rods I think I'd know it by now! Re: Setting the hook with non-loading guides

That's right, this scenario plays itself out on nearly any and every rod you'll find. The idea that is it unique to the Simple Spiral wrap only shows a lack of experience. But as I've said repeatedly, unless you're using a wildly sized guide arrangement where a guide never makes contact the line even under a good load, and creates a truly long space between a guide pair, it is of no consequence. And even then this is mostly a situation that would cause concern only the upper mid to tip area of a rod.
