I have an Alvey Rod and Reel and am thinking about redoing the rod from low position to regular spinning position. I like the rod but the Alvey reel is impossible to cast (for me), It is a 12 foot rod and like I said I like the actiion.
I have not done this before and would it be worth the effort? Re: redoing Alvey Rod

John what reel are you going to use? It certainly is a viable project. Re: redoing Alvey Rod

An Alvey is a completely different concept from what our friends down under call eggbeaters.
When the technique for casting an Alvey is mastered it can be one of the farthest casting set ups on earth. The only catch is that is backwards from what most of us have been taught (Alvey's are left handed). The guide spacing and the reel seat are layed out different due to the huge open face when the reel is in casting mode. The stripper guide for an Alvey is usually located at least half way down the blank. One of the problems that comes up with so much distance between the reel face and the stripper guide is line slap on the blank. You may want to reposition the guides and or adjust the size of the guides and do some static testing. I have about nine Alveys and they do what they were designed to do but they are heavy. I fished with them for years, I simply got tired of hauling a bunch of heavy gear down the beach. If it is on a Lamiglass blank it is probably and older one with a slower action. You can really put your back in to it and have some fun casting. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
