I'm building a bass casting rod and want to use single foot low frame guides for the majority of my guides and maybe two or three double foot guides near the butt. The help I'm looking for is what are some good low frame guides? Price really dosen't matter I just want them low. Thanks for the help.

Fuji Alconites are nice as are all the guides makers like Batson, American Tackle, Sevier, Pac Bay. They all make ceramic single foot low fly guides. I wouldn't use more than one double foot guide, I've built quite a few with no double foots. Re: Guide selection

I see alconites mentioned a few times. If they work for you, check out the alconite set on the specials page at @#$%&. That's a pretty good $10 deal. If they were the heavier ones I'd use for SW rods, that special would be history. Re: Guide selection

I would go with the fly guides, not only low framed they will save you weight out toward the end of the blan. Moving the balance point further back towards the handle Re: Guide selection

Hey, thank you for all your responses. It seems fly guides may be the way to go. This was my first post and I'm just amazed how many people care and are willing to give ideas. Re: Guide selection

Depends on how powerful a bass blank you're using, but like the others, I almost always use all single foot fly guides. Alconites are listed as BLAG (black frame) or CLAG (chrome). SiCs--my preference--are listed as LSG. Titanium Frame SiCs are listed as TLSG, but they're quite pricey.
My typical bass casting set-up involves a sz. 6 top, quite a few sz. 6s guides, then one 7, one 8 and one 10 as a butt guide. You could probably even skip the 7s and 8s and just go from 6s to the 10. I set up all my bass rods using the "simple spiral" method outlined in RodMaker Magazine. It places the majority of the guides on the bottom of the blank, then just the butt guide on the top. It's a fantastic set-up, and offers quite a few advantages over the old conventional "guides on top" casting rod set-up. Plus, the "simple spiral" method is easy to set-up. I'll go up to a double-foot size 10 on the butt guide, if the rod is going to regularly handle 20 lb. line or larger. The reason for this is that there can occasionally be a little side pressure on the butt guide, and I've found that the single foot guides or more apt to shift a little than their double-foot counterparts. The other reason to use a double-foot butt guide is if you're prone to step on your rods while they're on the rod deck. A double-foot guide will stand up to that abuse better than a single foot. Then, there's the rod locker issue. . . . Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
