If you have a lathe, you can turn the off pretty quickly with a Stanley Sur-form file. Just get down close to the blank and install the replacement over the top of what's left.
Or, you can sometimes slice them off the rod just like skinning bark from wood, but you have to be careful not to slice into the blank. Either way you do have a little work ahead of you. .............. Re: Removing Grips

No, I think what's been said is that you strip off the old one, and put the new one over whatever residue from that is left on the rod. I don't think there will be much left when you slice into the reel seat to get it off, much less the EVA grips.

It is possible to remove the grips with the blade out of a 6 inch block plane and you can do so without hurting the blank. Be sure the blade is VERY sharp and has no burrs on the flat side of it. It is best to wear leather gloves while performing the removal. Lay the flat side of the blade on the blank while pushing away from you, if you keep the blade flat against the blank it will remove the grip and not damage the blank, simply rotate the blank a little after each stroke.
