I have built rods for several years and until now have never had the occassion to replace a rod guide in the field. All that I need to know is what product is out there that will allow me to place a finish on the rod thread without aid of a dryer motor. I need a very quick drying product. Not as tough as Permagloss, but easier to keep and use is a water based varnish like Gudebrod Rod Finish.
It is thin like Permagloss, but a little better shelf life once opened, and cleans up with water. Will save a fishing trip without being harsh like nail polish and some of the other things we have seen people use in a pinch. I don't know just how long you plan to use it "in the field" before getting a chance to make a proper fix, but ... just wrap the guide, two coats of CP and go fishing, it will hold for a LOT longer than you think without any problems. Re: field repair of rod guide

Field expedient is just that. Whatever works for a day or three. For me, looks aren't all that important if I need a field repair. Thread alone can work well. Quick dry nail polish if you want a repair as you are fishing. Permagloss or a varnish for overnight. Electrical tape always sits in my tackle box too.
My bass pro neighbor has used mono line from his reel coated with 5 minute epoxy in a pinch. Not that I'd recommend it but it certainly works.. especially after repairing those "repairs". Not pretty, but things don't get much more durable. Re: field repair of rod guide

Wrap with whatever fishing line/tippet you have and coat with Loon's knot sense, which I always carry. Can be back fishing in less than 10 minutes with something that will last and is easy to take off later for a proper repair. Re: field repair of rod guide

I have just used dental floss for thread and Superglue over the thread.

Super glue or fly tying head cement is a good field substitute.
I've also used just plain 2 lb tippet to re-wrap a guide and it worked great for the day. Terry Re: field repair of rod guide

Super glue is good for loose inserts also. Regards......Doug@ TCRds Re: field repair of rod guide

The quickest field repair of all - rip it completely off and stick it in your pocket - almost every day in the bay boat with the specs tearing it up! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
