how long should we leave a newly epoxy-finished rod before using it

Hi guys,

New comer here. Just finished my fourth rod, thinking of going off shore fishing with it tomorrow... the epoxy is still 3 hrs away from complete curing... any idea what is the ideal time before one can use a newly completed rod?

I dont want the guides to start giving way just because i am eager to use it fresh from the oven.

Thanks.

I wait at least four to five days.

What you mean by complete curing could mean a lot of different circumstances. To most it means from three to five days. As far as fishing with it goes "Do What You Gotta Do"! The finish will never know the difference.

Loo,

I agree with Bill. Since you are the builder, you can do anything you like with your rod. In sunny Singapore, I will advise you to allow at least 3 full days for complete curing.

Loo,

The guides wouldn't give way even if there was NO finish on the threads.

The only 'problem' with fishing the rod before the epoxy cures completely is that you may damage the 'look' of the finsih (scratch or 'dent' it).

I've finished them in the afternoon, take it off the dryer before going to bed and fished it the next day and never had any problems, however on customers rods I wait 2-3 days before I hand the rod over just in case.

If you have a good mix of the coating, and warm temps when curing, 10 hours from coating to fishing should be fine.

Take care
Roger
