I'm building a fly rod for an old friend who plans to fish in south-eastern Oregon and adjacent Idaho streams. He hasn't fly fished in over 30 years and wants to get back in it, so he hasn't been a lot of help as to what he might require and I don't know either. I build light weight saltwater rods and have only built one other fly rod
The friend plans to get some flyfishing instruction in the next few months. I decided to build him an 8', 4-5 weight fly rod for starters. Should I put a short detachible fighting butt on it (1.25") or just forget it. I haven't fly fished in more years than he, so it's like I'm building this rod as a blindman and have no knowledge as to the areas he might fish. Thanks for your input/opinion. No need for a fighting butt on the rod. Re: Fighting Butt Help

I am a Eastern fly fisherman and an all around rod here is a 8'6"" 5 weight . anything in the 8' range and less is used on smaller streams, around a 15 to 20 foot cast. IMHO! Re: Fighting Butt Help

Thanks Spencer and Don.
From what I can determine, he will be using the rod on smaller streams that are hard to get to, down in canyons, etc. I have the figting butt built but won't use it. . Stan Re: Fighting Butt Help

Take a look at Cortland reel seats. You can have screw-in extensions with option that is not a problem. You do not need it, fine, you want one, screw one on, but the seat alone works fine.
These are very nice seats, by the way. Hive Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/25/2007 10:42AM by Robert Hively. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
