markings on fly rod blanks

Hi Guys,

Was wondering what pens you all use to personalise your rods. I have used gel roller pens before but I find that they smudge when I put the varnish on. What pens do the likes of Winston, Thomas & Thomas, Scott and Hardy use? I cant get the ink to flow properly and thus don't get a fluid inscription. Any ideas?

I've used gel pens successfully -- key for me is, I put a coat of color preserver on and let it dry before putting the epoxy finish protector on it....no smudging. Actually, I'm experimenting at present with using the gels to put the blank section alignment dots on (after all the finish applications) without CP or epoxy just to see how long they will last unprotected (I didn't like the extra coat of finish on top of them on previous rods).

Jelly Roller Gel pen made in Japan. Stapels use to sell them but not any more. I found them in various carft stores so should not be a problem finding them. I write on the first coat of rod finish then apply the second coat after. No Smug just let it dry a bit before ya put your finish on.

The companies you mention don't use pens. They use either decals or have the stuff screen printed directly on the rod blanks.

Ah, makes sense - I always wondered how someone could get soch uniformity on their markings!!! Thanks for all your suggestions, I'll try and get a hold of some of the jelly roller gel pens.

Best regards,
Gavin
