Hi Guys,
I am in the process of building up this blank. Does anyone know if the sig V's fish well with any particular brand of fly line (or do they all work roughtly as weel as the other). I prefer double tapers and most of my fishing is pretty close in. Thanks. Gavin Re: Dan Craft Signature V 8'6 3 wt

If you fish close in, then most likely you'll like the rod better with a 4 or 5 weight line. How close in are we talking? 15 feet? 20 feet? less?

Nobody has posted the CCS data for the Sig. V 863-4 yet. Gavin, if you would test your blank and post the data, many other fly rod builders would really appreciate it. If you don't know how to do the test, read the info at the link to the left called "common cents info" and you will see it's very simple to do.
Based on what the ERN of the blank is, you can make a good choice about what line to use based on the way you fish and your personal preferences. If you fish close, taper doesn't matter too much since most fly lines are very similar in the first 30 feet. I mostly fish in close also because the water I fish is small to medium and I like the stalking, stealth approach to flyfishing. I get better line control, better hooksets, and spook fewer fish by casting short. Most fisherman look too far ahead and spook 10 trout while casting over them to one that's far away. If you don't want to do the test, ask Dan about line recommendations for the way you fish. Dan fishes like crazy and is very familiar with all his rods from first hand fishing experience. Hi Steve, sure I'll do the test as soon as I have the blank - would it be preferable if a did a test on the blank and once the rod is built up? Gavin Re: Dan Craft Signature V 8'6 3 wt

Thanks Gavin, that would be much appreciated. Yes, I guess it's preferable to do it on the bare blank for two reasons: 1) The blank is easier to "level" than the rod since there are no handle components installed yet; and 2) The bare blank will be unaffected by guide style and number, finish type and thickness, etc. In practice, however, the difference between a bare fly blank and a built fly rod on the same blank is typically only about 0.1 to 0.3 ERN, so it's not that big a deal. Steve: appreciate that you have done many, many tests on rods and blanks. I have done only about a couple dozen -- I always wrap the ferrule female joints temporarily before doing a test o a pre-finished blank as I worry about cracking on flexing. Is this your practice also, or have you tested flexing without wraps ?

So far, I have not wrapped ferrules and have not damaged any blanks in the process. Wrapping the ferrules is probably a good idea and maybe I've gotten lucky that I haven't damaged any blanks. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
