Wrapping threads

Last night I was looking at some very nice examples of wrapping and weaving on another web site. There were so many colors used and I was wondering where some of you get your threads. I'm thinking of brands and sources other than the standard Gudebrod threads. I would appreciate any replies.Dave

Dave, I learned about Sulky brand thread on this board. It is a thread sold at fabric stores. It is not as strong as size A rod wrapping thread and I have only used it for underwraps in making diamond and chevron crosswraps. The colors are vibrant and reflect light very well. Someone wrote that I could also use them for wrapping guides but to first wrap with size a regular white thread and overwrap with the Sulky thread. If you do not use color preserver then the white thread will be almost translucent. I buy mine at Hancock Fabrics. These are rayon threads.

Ellis,

What size or sizes do they come in and how does that compare to size A Gudebrod? Thanks, Dave

Dave; They are smaller than size "A" thread. I would suggest that you stay away from sewing thread and use the embroidery thread if that's what you want to do. You should wrap some around a mandrel and count the number of threads you get per inch. It will usually be found in two weights 30 and 40 with 30 being the thicker or heavier of the two (I think that's right). Goodluck....

So does rayon act the same as nylon regular thread in respect to color preserver. Do you use CP? Which kind (or brand) of CP do you use, water or alcohol base?

I don't want to add too much thread to a light weight rod but I lke the idea of more colors. So if I need a white regular nylon wrap under the rayon can I use size 00 nylon and does anyone have any experience with strength of 00 nylon?
Lou Lampe.

Yes you will need a color preserver unless you want them to become opaque.
