Got my St. Croix SC V in the mail today. It was drop shipped from the company. The model is a 5C66MF. I measured this blank and it is 1/2 inch short. It measures in at 6' 5 1/2". Am I crazy or is this how it works? This is my first expensive blank to build. the other blanks i have built on have been right on. This is my first St. Croix.

What's going to happen if it's 1/2" shorter? Big deal.

I'm glad to hear the SC5 backorder is starting to get filled. I've heard a number of people have them B/O'd, including myself.

With a cork grip and the butt cap, it's a quarter inch longer. Add the tip-top on, that's another quarter inch. Measure the finished rod, and it's 6' 6"...

Scott-

I am with you for top dollar, I want top quality, top customer service and a warranty.

This is one reason that I perfer to handle the blank and pick it out myself. I got to say, if your unhappy tell them. I am sure they will exchange it.

Thanks,
jeffrey

I just expected the rod to be 6'6" long like the other "cheaper" blanks I have built on. It's not a huge deal. If you pay top dollar for something you just want it to be right. I did add the tip top like Randy said and it added 1/4 inch. Once I add the handle and cap it should be fine. Thanks for pointing that out Randy. Maybe that is why it is a 1/2 in. short to start with?

In general, will you find that some blanks are a little short and some that are a little long than what is stated?

Thanks again for everybody's help and input. Scott

There have been several lines of blanks that I've purchased that have been 1/2" short of the stated length and I always just figured that they intended for the 'finished' length to be their stated length. At least it kinda made sense to me at the time.

I don't measure the blanks to the 1". I do know the stated tip tip size can be off by a size or so depending on the blank. As long as blank making is a MANUAL process, then tehre will be slight diffrences between blanks from the same line & off the stated specs.

Blanks are built a tad long on the mandrel, and then are trimmed at specified locations both fore and aft. This generally gives the proper butt and tip diameters as well as the proper length. St. Croix may indeed trim those just a tad short so the finished rod will come out at the specified length or someone may have just trimmed things a little short.

As one of the other posts suggests, some of the blanks are right on, some are a tad short, and some are a tad long.
I have had all models of the St Croix series, SCII, SCIII, SCIV, and SCV - received both ways. i.e. + or - 1/2 inch.
Generally, the "exact" length is not a big deal. However, if it is, it is a simply matter to trim a 1/2 inch off the butt, or add a 1/2 inch butt cap to extend it to the length required.

Actually most of the blanks are right on. It is just that from time to time, I have seen these variations.
I have found this to be true in blanks from most manufacturers. i.e. a slight variation in overall length.

Take care
Roger
