Date: August 06, 2007 09:16PM Hi Friends, After burning and destroying few rod tips trying to remove old or damaged tip tops using a lighter (Did you exeprience it before? ohhhhhh it @#$%&!), I would like to ask you: How do you remove those tip tops and make sure don´t damage the rod? Regards, Rogerio de Paula Brasil Re: Tip top removal

A heat gun works nicely if it has been put on with these recent tip top adhesives. I had an experience with an old solid fiber glass rod that gentle heat would not do. I finally used a butane tourch and with all the pulling and tugging it finally Exploded! I conclude it all depends on the age of the tip adhesive. Beware of these old rods when replacing the tip.

Did you hold the lighter in one place?? With any heat, you have to keep it moving or you may melt the blank Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Tip top removal

Just put the tip in a boilable plastic baggy and put in hot water, brought to a boil and then turn of the heat , after 3 or 4 minutes in the hot water it should slide right of. Same method as removing a reel seat with no chance of melting the tip of the blank. After you get the tip top off clean with scotch brite and install the new one. Might take a little longer than with a lighter but much safer.
Bob Crook La Pine, OR PS: Don't try to pull it off with bare fingers, it will be hot!!!! I use a small pair of needle nose pliers. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/06/2007 11:38PM by Bob Crook. Re: Tip top removal

Bob's idea is one we use. For really recalcitrant tips we use our alcohol torch and sweep the pinpoint flame along the area while keeping a "pull" on the tip until it slides off.

Date: August 07, 2007 07:47AM Dear Bob, The idea looks great! The boilable plastic bag you mean is like a zip lock bag? I will try to use this aproach next time and need to find the "tools" here in Brasil. Thank you all guys for your help! Regards, Rogerio de Paula Brasil Re: Tip top removal

Rogerio,
Yes, I use a small zip lock bag, put it over the tip and squeeze out most of the air and then wrap a rubber band around it to hold it on the tip section . Bob Crook La Pine, OR Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
