repair of a bamboo rod

Anybody out there done any repair on a bamboo fly rod. Have a very old , we think it is a Montaque fly rod. Is anyone familiar with this rod. We are going to have to replace some guides, refinish the blank if possible. This rod was found at a yard sale by a personal friend of mine and also an x-rodbuilder. He wants me to repair this rod for the people and I have never worked on a bamboo rod. It is a very heavy 3 pc. nine foot rod with an extra tip. No names or any identifing marks that we can find. It was in a rod sock and an old cardboard tube. I know we will not have an authentic rod when we are finished but this is what the owner wants. Just back in fishing condition. What kind of finish do they put on these rods and can we very carefully remove and redo the finish. If so how.

thanks

Jim Smith

You can either scrape the finish off, or remove it with a mild stipper stripper such as 3M Safe Stripper. Refinish with Permagloss or varnish. Normally, bamboo rods are finished by dipping in thinned, warm, varnish. You may or may not wish to go to that trouble, however.

Make sure the sections are still securely glued and that you do not see any delaminations anywhere along its length.
