Maderia thread

I am new to rod building and have been reading this forum for some time and have learned quite a bit from reading the questions posed by others. I have finally taken the plunge and decided to ask one myself. I recently purchased a Pac-Bay Power wrapper, the one that has the thread carriage with a horizontal rod that you place the spool of thread on. Having read in another post on this site that if you use Maderia thread (1000Yd spool), it is helpful to replace the original horizontal rod with one of a greater length. I've done that but I've encountered a problem. When wrapping guides, because of the extreme angles created by the thread unwrapping over the length of the spool, the thread seems to often overlap the threads as they go on the blank. I've tried nudging the carriage along to prevent the overlap but it is extremely time consuming and does not seem to solve the problem. I have to reverse the rod., unwrap the overlap, move the carriage and start over. Short of unwrapping the maderia thread and placing in on a "conventional "spool (the short ones), I was wondering if anyone has a solution. Thanks

I`ve never had any luck letting the carriage do the moving on its own. With or without Madeira. Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: Maderia thread

Mine moves like a dream until I get to a bed joint. Then I "bump" it by hand. Every now and then i'll get some thread trimmings binding up one of the rollers, but that's an easy fix. take it off and remove the thread.
I've gone back to the vertical post carriage for the 1000m Madeira spools. Mark Griffin [] C&M Custom Tackle San Dimas, California Re: Maderia thread

Thank you for replying. I guess I was not clear in explaining my problem because so few have responded. I do move the carriage ever so slightly when using spools such as Gudebrod but because of the overall length of the maderia spools the carriage has to be moved a significant amount ,relative to when I wrap with the "short "spool. I now take for granted that is normal. Re: Maderia thread

I think you've answered my question in that you use the carriage that mounts the thread in a vertical position when using the 1000 meter spools. I would assume that's how you avoid the extreme angles I was referring to. Re: Maderia thread

I've thought about modifying the "new style" carriage with the horizontal spool holders. I was going to a similar dimension threaded rod, and drill a small hole about 1" in front of the horizontal rod. This shoud allow adequate space for the spools of thread. A small washer and bolt on the bottom, and the same hardware from the horizontal spool(spring, wing nut) on top. I have yet to do this modification, but I'm thinking it might work? The vertical rod will be removable which will be good since not all my thread is Madeira.

Bruce, Go to my Photo gallery and look at the carriage I made for my pac bay power wrapper for the Madiera thread and it works great. Hope this helps. Scott Re: Maderia thread

I transfer all Madeira to smaller nylon or wood spools before putting it on the carraige.
