Great news. I'm not going to be making oodles and oodles of these, so turning it every, what, 5 minutes or so, would be a much more cost effective deal for me. So what you guys are saying is that I can get started doing this for the cost of a new dremel (mine's broken), some plywood, a phone book, and some thread/epoxy? Can I use thread from the sewing store as well?

start with turning the rod with fresh finish about every 2 minutes for the first 15min.
Then go to about 5min for about 1/2 hr and 10min after that. It's really depends
on how heavy you apply it, temperature, ect.

Sewing thread works well (except for rayon) and you will need some color preserver as well as
a few other odds & ends. Top of the list should be the "Rodbuilding Guide" by Tom Kirkman.
The best $$$ you could spend and several sponsors carry it in stock.

Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it..
