Patriotic Tiger wrap?

Howdy fellas, I have a customer that wants a USA rod and I was thinking of doing a tiger wrap for him. I have done several different color combos in the tiger wrap so far but none in a red/white/blue. What color combo do you think would be the most striking and visible? I was thinking a metalic red and white on the base wrap with a blue metalic for the top thread? Do you think it would work with that combo? Thanks for letting me pick your brain with this. Mike

Why not spend 15 minutes and wrap several combos and see which one you like the best?

It's tough, because the bottom threads only set the contrast - the top layer sets the overall color.

I'm going to throw out something really off the wall for you. Have you ever twisted any thread? We did an article on this many years ago. If you were to make the bottom layer black and white, and then overwrap with a twisted red and blue, you might, just might, get the effect you want. However, the twisted thread may be too large in diameter to match the bottom and so the effect might not be quite as you hope.

This is just an idea for you to try if nothing else works out.

Craig if you spent more time on this site instead of NYBASS worming around, you'd know this is a standard Billy tidbit of advice.

Can I suggest that you use the actual colors of the flag?

An NCP white will be all the contrast you need as a base - really bright if you use a couple coats of Cp on it anyway. Use the "true" blue and red - Gudebrod has a dark blue and a Navy that will make it nicely. There are several bright reds, too.

We've found another way to do this - it's an American Flag tape, found in craft stores, spiralled up the blank, either as a closed wrap or spaced between the spirals. If you do it over a Navy underwrap it's pretty spectacular. But that won't produce your tiger wrap, so it's of no use in this case.

Have you tried using red/white under blue over or blue white under and red over? I've done both and they look very good, but as Tom said, you probably aren't going to get what you may be looking for. While very striking, the tigers are at the same time, rather subtle and aren't going to give you a huge triple color contrast.

Billy's tip as usual, is on par. When you have some time, get a stick and wrap a crapload of 2" samples using everything you can think of. You'll have a great reference point after that. The best way to learn things like tigers is to do them, because photos simply cannot capture them and their colors, and similarly, they cannot be described.

How about concentrating on getting the red contrasted with white in the main wrap and then getting the blue from your tie off wraps? The tie offs give you that third color option.

Mike

I just finished a tiger wrap butt wrap in Cleveland Indian colors. I used Gudebrod regular scarlet and ncp white for the base wrap and used regular navy for the top wrap. It came out really nice. At second glance one could say it is a rather "patriotic looking" wrap!

Can't get more patriotic than "old glory"!

If the client is or was in the military adding the branch insignia
( like the Marine Corp's globe & anchor) somewhere would really
be impressive.

Funny thing about Tiger Wraps, Its sometimes difficult to represent 3 separate colors within the wrap itself, and expect each individual color to be visible. Ive done plenty of Old Glory rods with Tiger Wraps. With the guide wraps its easy to distinguish each color of red white and blue, but when blended together in a Tiger Wrap, when the rod is viewed as a whole the overall hue of the Tiger wrap wrap will be a purplish mix compared to the distinct red white and blue of the guide wraps...making it seem a bit out of place on the rod. Chances are, even though the theme of the rod is red/white/blue, there will most likeley be a predominant color in the scheme. Lets say for example the most dominant color on the rod is blue, with lesser amounts of red and white, like this:
[i36.photobucket.com]
In this case I would opt to make the tiger wrap blue with a neutral color as the contrast...white will work perfectly. and I would use the red and white trim on the ends to mirror the guide wraps. To be precise, with this particular guide wrap, I would go with NCP-A white and NYL-A 246 blue for the bottom layer, and NCP-A 246 Blue for the top.

Awesome tips guys! You are a great group to get ideas and learn from for sure. Yes, I do realize doing an actual wrap would give me a better idea but was looking for some guidence that's all, thx for the thought tho!

Scott, once again you go out of your way to provide precise info. Thank you so much for your time that you put into this site in answering questions. You fellas have a great weekend and get out there and fish if ya can. :) Happy belated 4th to you.
