Guide wraps with mono? I know...stupid question.

I have to ask cause I do not know. But is wrapping with a monofilament a bad or good idea? I like some mono colors and think it would like good on the right blank. Any comments would be very much appreciated.

Did one on one of my rods after seeing the pictures in RodMaker that I think Tom submitted. Has worked well so far. Coated with Permagloss, but I bet it would work with epoxy also.

Wrapping with mono is fine. I've done it, it is a strong line to hold guides. It is really no different than wrapping with nylon thread with CP. It alawys ends up cloudy looking, but cool!

Only thing you'd need to watch out for is the UV resistance of the mono line. Depending on how long its out in the sun for, you'd probably be re-wrapping it more often than using normal thread.

Epoxy will not stick to it, so you may have the finish peel or lift from the mono at some point. I'd do some test wraps on blanks that you can flex a bit. Just to know what you can expect a little further down the road.

Beyond that, I've done many mono wraps. The stuff is just a little hard to work with because of the memory and stretch factors. But it can be done.

Michael,,, if you are using regular nylon thread (like Gudebrod) for wrapping, you already have no UV protection. Use the poly threads not made for rod work, and you do get UV protection. A few other nylons have it as well. Odd situation really.

Paul,,,,, Fluorocarbon leader material is more UV resistant than regular mono, if you want to go that route.

Years ago I was repairing a Berkley Cherrywood rod and couldn't match the color of
the thread. I called Berkley and they were nice enough to send me a 1/4 lb. spool
of the thread. I didn't ask but I swear it was dyed Trilene XL in 6 or 8 lb. test.
After that I wrapped a few guides with Trilene XL and it handled looked and felt
identical to the Cherrywood wraps! At that time I was using Flecto Varathane for
a finish and the trilene handled it very nicely.
