Just recently started using Mettler polysheen, Question? Would it be safe to wrap singlewrap on top of guide or should I use nylon underwrap then overwrap with polysheen, being that I'm uncertain whether if the sheen would hold under pressure I figured I'd ask the Pros. I fixing to re-wrap a 552, 553, and a ULUA 9' 3" seeker also and how would this thread hold up for a 114HLW and bigger reels, extreme weights and long lines. Need good advice from a Pro. Rod, Reels and 18 wheels. Re: Advice from a Pro

The Mettler is fine. Pretty much like Madeira. Not sure why you are concerned about an underwrap. Underwraps don't have any bearing on the strength of a guide wrap since it's under the guide not on top. Underwraps may or may not, depending on personal preference, offer some protection to the blank (Not the guide) on heavy salt rods.
I would advise the use of CP on any embroidery thread that MAY have silicone or some type of lubricant for machine use or at least test ot first Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Mettler has a wide range of colors available, similar to Madeira. My experiments with application of epoxy directly on Mettler (I choose not to use color preserver on my fly rods) resulted in the Mettler repelling the epoxy.

Ed, I have been using Mettler for a while now and it is excellent. A little like Madiera in that it "sometimes" repels epoxy but not always. I have done a tartan using Mettler and it didn't repel at all and the bleed through was excellent. I really don't know if its worth taking that risk though. As for guide wraps, Aussie rod builder Ian Miller came up with a term he called the "Gulliver principle". He believes that with a smaller diameter thread you get a heap more wrap rotations onto the guide foot thus causing a considerable deal of strength. A larger diameter thread will not get as many rotations and therefore may not be as strong. Obviously if you are wrapping large guide feet eg rollers, you should use a larger thread (C). If you are worried about the mettler, why not double overwrap. The added weight will be of very little consequence and will not be noticed at all but will give you an added sense of security.

First I would like to express thanks to everyone, My apologies for not replying sooner, as for the underwrap I meant using the nylon on top for the guide foot then overwrap with Mettler. M. Fisher this is exactly what I had in mind "How would Large Guides Hold Under Pressure" using these threads. Being these blanks are large 10' reassuring the guide foot with nylon would be my best bet then overwrapping with the mettler. I sure do appreciate ALL the info from all the thread VERY informative. Just great. Eddie Rod, Reels and 18 wheels. Re: Advice from a Pro

I have one question concerning the use of thread containing silicone. Do you have to clean your thread tension and thread guide equiptment after using these threads to avoid contamination of future thread used? Re: Advice from a Pro

Honestly, I haven't had any problems yet with this thread it did darken a little even with the color preserve using flex coat, but I figured since I didn't use a undercoat/wrap the black of the blank showed a bit. As for the tension and thread guide I clean before I start a new wrap or as I see fit. Ed. Mark Fisher would be the best fit person that I know of to give a definite answer concerning this thread. Excellent question. Rod, Reels and 18 wheels. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
