It's always something ain't it?

First, I completed lashing on the hardware but could see I'd need a new spool of thread to do the weave with. So because the label always falls off, I had marked the spool G9270. Figured that must be Gudebrod, so the order was sent off. What was sent to me was a good deal darker of a green. Kind of a green/silver instead of the silver/green of the original. No problem, I can work around that. Just gonna take some time to tinker with color alternatives first.

Question is, just how often does that happen with the color changing so much?

Then, the Perma Gloss went on with a brush just terrific and since it was a rainy day things set up pretty fast. Six hours later I am making some layout marks with a pen and needed to change some marks. The alcohol took the marks off.... and the Perma Gloss too. No problem, I can work around that.

Question is, if I leave the Perma Gloss alone for a couple of days, will it cure sufficiently that alcohol won't strip it back off?

Finally, I tinkered with the 'coffee filter paper strip applicator' method of appying Perma Gloss to a second rod. The PG quickly wicks up the paper to the fingers and then they get all sticky. No problem, I can work around that. Got out the plastic gloves and wasn't annoyed by the sticky fingers anymore. Then, the PG on the glove begain to set and stick to the rod making fine spider silk hairs that went where they shouldn't. No problem, I can work around that.... back to good results with the brush.

Question is, what am I missing with the coffee filter applicators? Do you guys just cut a bunch of strips and when it starts to wick up, toss it out and grab a fresh one?

Thanks in advance!

Are you applying the PermaGloss to the rod blank or the wraps? You wouldn't use a coffee filter to apply it to the wraps. Only for finishing a blank with one or two quick passes.

Hi Tom,

Yes, I am applying the PG to the rod blank while spinning on the lathe. Maybe just hold the rod in one hand and swipe with the other eh?

Thanks,

Don't spin the blank. Just quickly swipe the length of the blank on both sides to get full THIN coverage. You can also use a "foam" brush with a tiny hole or slit in it to draw the blank through
