Guy's :
A kinda stupid question, but it came up the other night amongst some friends and myself about how rod smiths will flex coat the ENTIRE rod, guide wraps and all and some others will only flex coat the guide wraps.... I have "flexed" rods with both methods and dont find either of them to have any real advantage over the other, so is there a reason that this is done either way? I chalked it up to a customer's personal discretion ......? Any reason that either way is possibly better than the other ? Cheers Re: Guide wraps/rod flex coat ?

Well you are just adding weight to the rod if you coat it all. I use as little of epoxy as I can to just coat my wraps so I put on the least amount of extra weight. Re: Guide wraps/rod flex coat ?

Epoxy isn't made to be used as a rod blank coating. And as Mike pointed out, it's very heavy compared to more appropriate coatings made for the purpose of top coating such items. Lighter rods can be seriously undermined from a performance standpoint if you coat them with an epoxy.

Not to mention Flex Coat is priced just slighly lower than platinum and gold... Scott Kinney The Longest Cast Fly Rods [www.thelongestcast.com] Re: Guide wraps/rod flex coat ?

Are you sure you aren't mistaking a rod with a gloss finish for one with a natural, or matte finish? Never heard of anybody using flex coat for an entire rod. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
