Drill for Grizzly Hobby Wood Lathe

I have a Grizzly Hobby Wood lathe and am having trouble finding a drill, either electric or cordless, that has a front piece that doesn't turn to go into the holder. The holder has a 43 mm diameter. Does anyone have a suggestion??

Thanks in advance

Ron

" front peice that doesn turn"

ya lost me on that one? the chuck turns, and then there is a peice of the housing that is similar in diameter to the chuck...this part of the housing is what is clamped into the lathe.

I have the same lathe and have locked all three of my drills into it with no problems

The problem that I am having is to find a drill that has the piece of housing in front of the chuck. Sorry that I was not clear on that.

What make drill do you use?

Ron, Grizzly's (model #HO777) 1/2in drill mates well with that lathe. Listed under "accessories" on bottom of Hobby Lathe page (website).

Sears sells two drills that fit... the 1/4 inch model is not varible speed i believe..

*sorry edit* the links i posted to the drills wont work..

go to sears and search drills, then sort by price lowest to highest. The brand name is champion they carry these in there local stores. You can bring the piece that mounts the drill to the store with you to make absolutely sure they fit, thats what i did. They are 24.99 and 34.99 one is 1/4 inch but is not variable speed the other is 1/2 and is variable i suggest getting the varible speed model.

Try the Companion drills from Sears. I have used one going on two years now on my Grizzly lathe without problems.

The one that grizzly recommends/sells is a very good heavy duty one [www.grizzly.com]

I use the one that one that Grizzly sells and reccomends with mine, I have not had any issues with it, and the drill seems to be very good for the price.

Thanks for your suggestions. I went to Sears and they didn't have anything that would work in the store, so I ordered one from Grizzly. Again thanks for your help.

This board is the GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!

I used a Dewalt Electric 1/2" drill from Home Depot. Not a cheap drill, but I bet it'll outlast the Grizzly. I had to run the drill for a bit while slightly grinding down the chuck diameter (using a flat file) so that it would fit into the grizzly drill mount bracket. Great Drill Motor.

Torin, you are probably right. The rheostat on my Grizzly's that controlled speed already burnt out. So, now I have a VERY high speed and single speed drill. It's still okay for the lathe but useless now for things like driving screws or lag bolts because it's too fast. It's a very powerful drill.

The Grizzly HO777 drill has been discontinued--- I have a perfectly good heavy-duty Milwauke but it has a 47mm collar. Grizzly says their lathe requires a 44mm collar. My question is,
is there any margin at all in the mounting bracket on the lathe. In other words, can I force it?
