advices for rebuilding a rod

Hello Everybody,

First sorry for my English…… and I don’t know a lot about rod building. Rod building is not very popular in france.
I’ve just bought a second hand surf casting fishing rod for pendulum cast. It’s a daiwa HPB Match 12 feet casting weight 4-6 Oz.
They are 7 rings 30 25 20 16 12 12 12 and 1 tip top ref fuji 12-4.0 all the rings are on the tip. The actual rings are fuji hardloy NLG. The frame of most the rings are rusty : the rust comes from the feet within the threads (in some cases the threads are cracked because of the rust) and the rust comes from behind the eye of the ring but all the eyes are OK.

On the blank they are many scratches and some of them are quite deep so the over all looking is not good at all.

Last point the spigot is OK but I think it has not still plenty of use : the space between the butt and the tip is less than one cm

My questions are :
1) Concerning the rings what would you suggest ? which rings (hardloy, SIC …..) with which spacing ? Is it possible to use some other types of rings ( concept guide or low rider etc) ? Which size of thread A or C for the wrapping ? Underwrapping or not ?
Which finish ?
2) Concerning the blank once I have put off all the rings what need to be done in order to re varnish the rod ? Which product should I use ?
3) Concerning the spigot is it possible to change it ? or is it possible to “refill” it ?

Could you also give me advices where to buy all I need at a fair price (in France it is not easy to find and it is very very expansive).
Many Thanks

Hello Jerome,

Welcome and don't worry about your english. Few of us write it well either.

I'll try to answer a few of your questions, but I'm sure you will get other responses.

If you will be using the rod in salt water, then using guides with Titanium frames will be important. Both Fuji and American Tackle have models in titanum.

For surf rods, most of us use an underwrap. You can use C for the underwrap, and A for the guide wrap, or C for both. Either will be strong enough for your rod. The A thread will finish smoother than the C so it depends on how you want it to look. Also, I would consider adding more guides than 7 on a 12 foot rod. You should consider a total of 10-12 guides for this rod. Check the library section of this site for an article on guide placement.

Any of the brand finishes will work well. The most popular ones seem to be Threadmaster and Flexcoat (either light or high build)

If you plan on refinishing the rod blank itself, it's easiest to do this with all the guides off. One of the better products to use for this is U-40 permagloss.

I'm not sure what you mean by the spigot? I would have guessed you are talking about a ferrule (the section where rod pieces join together) but it doesn't sound like it. Maybe you can explain your gap problem a little differently, and where it is on the rod.

As far as buying your materials, there are some rod building shops in the UK that could save you some duties and shipping. However, I think the shops in the US have the best selection. I would look at one of the larger distributors that are accustomed to shipping internationally. Mudhole and Angler's workshop both have links on the left.

Hope this helps. Continue the questions here or you can send me an email directly.

Terry

I had to look it up in the Glossary but yes a spigot is a type of ferrule. I think what he means is that the male and female sides are worn to the point that the male end almost bottoms out in the female end, less than 1 mm of the male end remains exposed, before it is snug in the female end.

Hello Jerome,

I'm french too, I have a carp rod (12 feet 3,5oz-4,5oz) that I rebuilt for myself.
I used FUJI BMNAG Alconite guides (30 25 20 16 12 10 10 and 12 top) with this spacing:

Reel seat to the 30 guide: 100 cm
30 to 25 guide: 42,5 cm
25 to 20: 32,5 cm
20 to 16: 30 cm
16 to 12: 27,5 cm
12 to 10: 25 cm
10 to 10: 22,5 cm
10 to 12 (top): 20 cm

The lowriders guides are only if you use braid (tresse) on your reel. For mono line (nylon) with heavy schock leader, these guides are too small.
For remove the guides without damage the blank, I use a hairdryer to soften the wraps and I cut with a broken CD.
For remove your old varnish, pass your blank with 3M scotchbrite pad (sandpaper risk to damage your blank)
Angler's workshop is a good shop.

Hope this help.

Spigot. Spigot ferrule. Of course. Excuse my thick-headedness.

You can order a product called Ferrule Lube from U-40. Available from Anglers Workshop. It is a temporary solution though and eventually, you will need to replace the spigot as it is worn. 1 cm gap isn't bad as long as the fit is tight.

Others might have better suggestions for building up the spigot to avoid replacement, but the most reliabile is to fit a scrap of blank and replace the spigot.

Bon chance.

You can also just trim back about 1/8th inch (2 to 4mm) of the female portion which will allow the spigot to fit deeper into the taper of the female section and restore the original gap or space between the two sections. This is a time honored method for restoring the fit to spigot ferrules.

There is no need to do this, however, until the two sections are almost ready to bottom out against each other.

Many Thank's to all of you.

I appreciate your advices. I will look at the article on guide placement and I will tell you what I plan to do so you can correct me if I'm going to make a mistake.
I will also have a look at the shops you mentionned.
Concerning the guides do you think that fuji NSG type will be ok ? I use mono line 0.30 mm with a 0.70mm shock leader.

Once again Thank you
Jerome

Hello Jerome,

FUJI NSG guides (Sic) are not necessary for mono line, use BNLG (hardloy) or BMNAG (alconite) guides.
Hardloy are the cheapest, second Alconite (the best compromise) and Sic (the double of price than Alconite). The frame of Alconite is more resistant than NSG.
I use 14 lb (0,35 mm) mono line on my reel and 40 lb snag leader (0,60 mm;33 feet/10 mètres of length) without problems.

P.S: (0,30 mm= 10 lb and 0,70 mm= 80 lb)

Lindsay.
