I'm starting to put together my UL using a Rainshadow RX6, it is for small fish not meant to be used for a walking cane or anything like that(8' Sharks LOL), is there any reason to wrap the ferrule?

I would, if for nothing else, it would give me piece of mind,

i always wrap the ferrul no matter what i build like Mike said peace of mind for about 2 minutes of wrapping

Besides what Robert and Mark wrote above, it gives the rod a "classic" look. If you really want to dress it up, also do a narrow wrap on the female piece, leaving about 1/8 to 1/4 inch below the ferrule (for wear) and put a pair of "line-up" dots on the twso wraps. These can be ink dots (using the same kind of ink you'd use to write a name on the blank), added after the first coat of epoxy. Something you'd never see on a commerical rod.

By wrapping the ferrul, you eliminate any chance of it splitting, this goes for any blank all yo need is about 4 wraps near the end,

Bob, I was under the impression that it was 2 1/2 times the diameter of the blank at the ferrule??

I Ussually do Twice the Dia., But I wrap mostly Saltwater Rods

I was the one that starting the idea of wrapping the ferrule a distance equal to 1 and a half to 2 times the diameter at that point. It was something that fullfills the criteria for ferrule protection and also looked good cosmetically. The important part is to get the ferrule wrap as close to the edge as you can.

Even though the fish aren't going to be large, the rod will likely undergo very deep flex so I'd wrap it. Manufacturers should include the requirements and instructions for doing this on the blank packaging but almost none do. Lamiglas did at one time (they may still do it) and I think Loomis did it on the GLX, but I've not seen it elsewhere.

Hey, that's Bob your talking to!!! He meant twice the diameter, he just didn't spell it right!!!!!!

I have little slips from several manufacturers that came in the bag with the blank that say to be sure to wrap the ferrule even before you test or flex the rod. I wrap them. On a light rod I use a very narrow wrap at the edge of the ferrule and another wrap of the same diameter up the ferrule a ways.

I wrap mine also....but Ive wondered if a couple coats of permagloss would do nearly the same IF the area wasn't wrapped? I know wrapping would be stronger.
