I've made a few grips using a hand drill. However, I'm finding it more difficult to make a reel seat. There's more cork to remove. It's hard to get a perfect cylinder. It tends to go out of round.
I tried using a surform file to speed up the process. The file is shorter than the reel seat. So, I ended up moving the file back and forth, and the cylinder ended up being very oval shaped. On the second attempt, I'm using 60 grit sand paper. It's working better, but it's taking forever on the copano burl cork. Any tips? Re: Problems turning cork reel seat

Try backing your sandpaper with a wooden block. This will help shape everything more evenly. I also use a flat wood file (coarse, medium and fine). With a little practice and the right tools and you will turning out quality pieces very soon! Re: Problems turning cork reel seat

You also have to make sure you hold whatever tool you are using very steady and let it take off the high spots to get it to round. If you start out with something that is out of round and the tool just follows it shape when taking off material, you will end up with an oval shape. If you can set up some kind of tool rest it will make it easier to keep things round. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
