How long a rod case can you use for a carry on and safely assume you can get away without checking it?

Each airline has different rules. Some allow you to fit a bag on teh floor under your seat. You gotta call and find out. The one thing I would do is MAKE SURE you pack the crap out of it so if tehy change their mind and force you to check i in, when the mishandle it and treat it like a Javelin, it might not break. Also, airlines only insure bags to $100, so you might want to consider taking additional insurance. Again, each airline is different. Whatever they tell you, try to get it in writing, because you might get to teh gate and those eople have their own set of rules. It's like the Mafia, tehy make stuff up as tehy go along and there is NOTHING you can do about it.

I traveled on American Airlines to/from Symposium to Ontario, Ca. Came back with rod blank and parts for a (' Fly Rod in a Donart 36 inch case as carry-on baggage, no questions asked.

I have an Abel rod case that is 35 inches long that holds 4 to 8 four piece fly rods.plus all my reels. I've flown on just about every airline at one time or another and they don't have a problem with this case. If you try to carry on the 2 piece case or the case for 3 piece rods some airlines will make you check both. I only build 4 piece "travel" rods for just this reason.
