We ask the customer.

OK, I know that seems like a smartass asnwer, and I don't mean it to. What I did mean is, when anyone gives me a rod without history or markings, I ask them what they used it for, where they got it, what they thought it was, etc.

Thanks Russ, I was out fishing when the rod was brought in and the guy that brought it to me doesn't know about rods. He brings me free stuff all the time, then I don't charge him as much for fixing his computer, he's been a good source for getting rods and reels for free or cheap.

I will be a bit smart assed. I go about it almost the same way as I do for a fly rod that does have "specifications" written on it. I try it with a line and go up or down until it feels right for what I want to do with it. If I don't right away get a good fit that makes sense I use the common cents system on the rod and start anew.
