Could someone please inform me what grit sandpaper you would most likely use in order to strip the standard black finish of a St. Croix II blank down to the natural matt gray without removing stock? As always, thanks Re: Removing finish from blank?

Hi Rob,
I would start with scotchbrite. Had just a little similar project where I had best results with this type of stuff. If that will not work properly use 1000+ grid sandpaper. MAke teh blank wet and work careful and slowly with good light. Clean the area you work on in between frequently with water and a dry cloth to keep the overview over the entire process, to avoid bad surprises. Rgds, Ole Re: Removing finish from blank?

I used one of the citrus paint strippers to remove finish. Only had to lightly touch up some small spots with scothbrite, most came off while rubbing with the sharp edge of my plastic burnisher, Re: Removing finish from blank?

NO SANDPAPER!!! Use the Citri-Strip or Saf-Strip paint removers. I've used them a few times and gotten great results No harm to the blank and you don't risk harming the fibers with sandpaper grit cutting into the blank. Re: Removing finish from blank?

Such as Trondak U40 Permagloss; the most durable blank (clear) finish. It can be mixed with pigments and color the blank, also. Putter Williston, ND Re: Removing finish from blank?

I've had really good success with the citrus strip also. You may want to scuff the clear overcoat so the stripper can penetrate better. Bill in WV Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
