Hi All,
Does anyone have recommendations for guide spacing and number of guides for this blank? I'm building it as a switch rod with a removable butt if that makes any difference. Thanks! Re: Guide Spacing on 10' 8wt Dan Craft FT

Put all guides 3" apart all the way down to the handle Re: Guide Spacing on 10' 8wt Dan Craft FT

I built one to Bob Meiser's specs. Not a big fan of removable butt, they just leave one more thing to go wrong. I put on a 3.75 inch rear grip, Struble U 15 ,I believe, reelseat, 10.5 inch foregrip. Guides were Hopkins & Holloway 16,12, than 6 wire guides, size 6, 6, 5, 5, 4 and a pear shaped X Lrg wire tip top. I think the customer is using the line Bob recommended, the Hardy Mach-1 Salmon8/9. You can get away with as few as 7 on a switcher on the 10' FTs. The ones I've built usually get 8 or 9. Don't have the spacing in front of me though.
If all else fails, you can just use the other Scott's recommendation :). The removable butt has its pros and cons, I am still undecided... Scott Kinney The Longest Cast Fly Rods [www.thelongestcast.com] Re: Guide Spacing on 10' 8wt Dan Craft FT

Any suggestions for mounting? Just straight epoxy? Any particular type? I already have the parts, so I think I will continue on with it. Re: Guide Spacing on 10' 8wt Dan Craft FT

I've had a couple of them snap off the threaded insert when too much pressure was applied to the rear grip. Note that "too much pressue" never seems to occur while fishing...more of the 'oops, I sat on it' sort.
They're nice because they preserve the whole length of the rod to be used for casting...but I still wonder about the transfer of bottom hand energy to the blank when the butt is mounted away from it like that. In practice, it seems to work fine, so good enough I guess. Rod Bond is what I use for grips and reelseats, but any high strength slow cure epoxy should be fine. A liberal application inside the reelseat where you're going to be mounting the receiving end of the butt hardware is probably a good idea.
