Amtak epoxy question

Has anyone had experience using American Tackle's Clear Coat Rod Epoxy, High Build? How does it compare to Flexcoat? They advertise that the testing they have done puts it in the high end of rod finishes. Thanks in advance for you feedback.

I would put all the epoxy wrap coatings into the "high end of rod finishes." To me, they're all very similar with only certain characteristics being different, such as pot life, clarity and viscosity.

I've used the American Tackle epoxy finish and it's just fine.

Hey Gary,

American Tackle hi-build is all that I have used since I got back into building three years ago. It flows out evenly and it has a very nice pot life as I have gotten well over an hour out of the mixes I place on pieces of foil. I have tried Flexcoat which also works fine but does not have the pot life I need while I work on finishing the guide and butt wraps. I build mainly fly rods and I am very meticulous with my finishing so I need the time to work. Just because it says "Hi-build", do not expect it to be perfect in one coat. I normally apply three coats to properly cover the threads as I like them to be. I then rotate the rods for at least three hours.

I would highly recommend the use of the American Tackle Hi-Build thread finish. In my experience, it's best not to rush the finish coat - you can't rush quality. Good luck and keep 'em turnin'

I used it at one time and it did very well for me, no problems at all. It's a nice finish.

Thanks Charlie, that is what I was looking for, just some comments from a first had user. Especially the tip about the high build part. Good to know. Now I look forward to giving it a try.
