Has anyone used this stuff. A custom rod building house up here in MA has switched for Flexcoat to AFTCOTE.
What are the advantages of this if any over Flexcoat.
Bill.

It's an epoxy thread finish, just like Flex Coat. Not aware of any advantages. It has a longer pot life (advantageous to some, not to others) and maybe some different characteristics, but I wouldn't say it's better. Different, not better.

Bill,

I once used Aftcote 100% and use it 50% still. Aftcote is a THIN finish, and being so thin it penetrates VERY well and it's slow curing time alows a lot more "working time" than many other finish's. I like to use Aftcote as a 1st coat and Threadmaster as a last coat. If you use Aftcote the finish build up is minimal, you wont get "footballing" and you will get a level finish since it takes so long to cure. COMPLETELY different charactoristics vs Flexcoat.

I use Aftcote all the time and love it. It does take some getting used to and can be very finicky in mixing. I don't think the end result is any different than the other available finishes. It has a very long pot life and handles external heat very well. Randy.

I just used Aftcote last week for the first time and like it. It is a bit thinner than Flex Coat High Build and does have a longer pot life. Bubbles released easily and it leveled just fine, but I use very thin applications regardless of what brand I use. It takes a bit longer to cure as well. I think getting used to any particular epoxy finish is the key, they all work. If you're used to Flex Coat you might want to try the Aftcote finish on a spare blank to get the experience of working with it. I think you'll like it.

Aftcote levels as good as any finish I've ever used...but then again ALL finishes will level if you give them the chance. It does take longer to cure. That is why I have my drying motor in a small room (I use my homes utility room), turn on a small space heater in there (one of the small modern ceramics works well), and shut the door. I don't have any problems with Aftcote.
