Spinning Reel Seat vs. Fly Rod Seat

I am new to rod building and wanted to use a fly seat on my spinning rod build. Specifically one with the concealed front hood. Spinning seats are sized 16,17,18 etc. Fly seats seem to be 7,8,9. So does an 8 in a fly rod seat = an 18 in a spinning seat?
Also, Is there any other issues using a fly seat on a spinning rod? Thank You, Jeremy Re: Spinning Reel Seat vs. Fly Rod Seat

The graphite/nylon seats are measured per ID in milimeters. That's the 17, 18, etc., etc., that you see. I'm really not up to speed with how companies list their specialty fly seats. I'm not sure there is one standard system. Have your dealer measure it for you.

i ran into the problem of spinning reel seats being longer and thicker than fly reel seats. i built a spin fly rod with a pac bay A8 which is a saltwater fly reel seat and i could not get my ultra light spinning reel to fit. it was a cheap pflueger so i ground the foot to make it fit that rod. take the reel with you
if you can. most likely it won't fit a fly seat. its too bad because the selection of fly seats is so much greater than spin seats. Re: Spinning Reel Seat vs. Fly Rod Seat

I think Larry hit one of my bigger concerns on the head. As Tom suggested I got the Measurements of the seat. Now it is a question of my reel fitting. I guess I will have to order it and try it.
Thanks, Jeremy Re: Spinning Reel Seat vs. Fly Rod Seat

You need to order as large a fly seat as you can find. The spinning reel feet are too large for most fly seats.

Possibly, you are getting the __line weight of the flyrod__ mixed in with the diameter of the reel seat? If memory serves, the smallest reel seat is 16 or so MM inside diameter, nominal.
Many of the sponsors over on the left will show all the reel seats out there, so you can pick the one with the diameter and specs that works for you. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/16/2007 03:01PM by Ken Driedger. Re: Spinning Reel Seat vs. Fly Rod Seat

A simple solution that would allow you to use a fly and spinning reel would be to use a graphite spinning seat that will accommodate the spinning reel and hold a fly reel more securely than will most flyrod seats. You lose the concealed hood but gain a positive seat for both reels. Stan Grace Helena, MT "Our best is none too good" Re: Spinning Reel Seat vs. Fly Rod Seat

Persuant to Stan's post above: it's technically not that hard to conceal the hood with the affected ring of cork. (First ring, or last ring, depending on how you call it, on the grip)

If your intent is to have something different than the standard graphite spinning seat, you might want to check out the aluminum spinning seats from REC. They don't have a recessed hood, but do offer a more distinctive (IMHO) look than the graphite seats.
