Does anyone have an idea just how long ago a fishing rod or "pole" was created using today's basic construction, that being of a stick with some type of "guide" attached by sinew, a varnish or whatever that the line might run thru? Just curious. Thanks Re: History of today's basic rod construction?

It would have to go back nearly 200 years. Perhaps further.

What did Dame Julia Barnes fish with? Might be some information in her writings. Re: History of today's basic rod construction?

Early engish anglers mostly used horse hair or silk tried directly to their rod tip however i guess rod guides where developed at more or less the same time as the fishing reel.
Regards Charlie “The earliest known illustration of what is clearly a fishing reel is from Chinese paintings and records beginning about 1195 A.D. Fishing reels first appeared in England around 1650 A.D†[en.wikipedia.org] Re: History of today's basic rod construction?
