everytime i go into this tackle shop (they build custom rods) i always see rods on the drying motors and a dark color liquid is dripping from them....does anyone know what this is?

and on a lot of factory rods it looks like the whole rod has been covered in finish instead of just the guide wraps...why is that? also doesnt that take up a lot of finish?

You don't go to the shop immediately following a Grateful Dead concert, do you? If so, don't eat any of those little mushroom appetizers they are passing around...

Are they finishing bamboo rods?

There is a technique that is called flow over where you pour on the varnish and let the drying motor rotate the rod while the varnish drips off.

Other types are dip tube, spraying, brushing........

If I was in a tackle shop, which also housed a fellow rodbuilder. I would ask the maker of the drips. lol. Next time your there, ask for a tour of his set up.
