Hi Guys
I have two questions: 1. Just how tight must the thread be when wrapping a fly rod? I've heard some guys say that it must not be too tight as it could damage the blank and effectively make it slightly oval at the wrap. Some say it must not go "ting ting" when wrapping...that's too tight. I like wrapping the thread on quite tight, it's easier to make a nice neat wrap like that. 2. Just what is "Spiral Wrapping" of the guides that I see you guys talking about? Is there any pictures on the sight to illustrate it? And what are the benefits, or why do spiral wraps on a fly rod? (Especially if it has 4 sections or more). Thanks and regards Mike Re: Thread tightness off the spool whilke wrapping, & what is spiral wrapping?

Hi Michael
I don't have an answer about the spiral wrap but I have an idea on the guide wraps. I wouldn't wrap the guides too tight. It is best to have them snug for any post wrapping minor adjustments you might need to make to get a proper alignment. I have also heard that a wrap that is too tight can damage the blank I have never had this issue but it does make logical sense. Hope that helps Regards Scott Re: Thread tightness off the spool whilke wrapping, & what is spiral wrapping?

Michael-Go up to the top and click on Photos-you will find many spiral wrapped rods in most of the categories so you could see them for yourself. You could also use the search button and find out all you could ever want to know about the topic, it been discussed many times. And no, not on a fly rod. Spiral wrapping is for bait casting reels only, all others are already on the bottom-spin and fly.
Also use the search for tension on your wraps-you won't believe how much information is available. For a simple answer, 35 pennies weight wise is adequate. Welcome aboard-- And be fore warned, this is very addictive!!! Fred Fred Crum Dixon, Ca. Re: Thread tightness off the spool whilke wrapping, & what is spiral wrapping?

Thanks for the info guys, and yeah...I am already addicted, and only built one rod so far!!! Came out beatifully must say...a 9', 5wt, 2 pce cheapish rod, but looks like a high-end rod! Plus performs pretty good too.
I searched the site, on thread tension, but no real answers (maybe I'm not looking good enough), so maybe some more insights please? Regards Mike Re: Thread tightness off the spool whilke wrapping, & what is spiral wrapping?

Mike--go to the top of the page in the red banner that says "GO TO:" and click on search, type in thread tension for your subject, click on one year and all forms, I just got 13 pages, or 383 seperate entries. Your could go back longer if you like as well. Also type in sprial or bumper wraps as well; you will be amaized at the information.
It'll take a while to learn to navigate this site as well as the photo site, but well worth the extra effort. By all means don't be afraid to ask questions, we all enjoy talking about rod building as well as making and using them!!! If we can help you in your endevor that's all the better!
